Digital NORNA-föreläsning den 31 mars med Sofia Evemalm-Graham
Tisdag den 31 mars kl. 15–16 (svensk tid) håller Sofia Evemalm-Graham, Lecturer in Celtic & Gaelic, University of Glasgow, en digital NORNA-föreläsning öppen för alla intresserade.
Titel: Borg, Borve, brugh: the semantics of ON borg in the Hebrides
Sammanfattning:
In this talk, I will examine the development and semantic range of the Old Norse element borg in the Hebrides, primarily focusing on Harris, Uist and Barra. Borg is a particularly productive element in areas of Scotland with Norse toponymic influence, and borg-names often later become firmly embedded in a Gaelic context as Borgh, Borve or Dùn Bhuirg(h). In the case of the latter, the name typically refers to an Iron Age broch or dun.
I will also consider the later Gaelic cultural context of these sites, particularly the folklore motif ‘Dùn Bhuirg(h) na theine!’ (‘Dùn Bhuirg(h) on fire!’), in which Dùn Bhuirg(h) sites are viewed as the dwelling places of fairies.
